The Lowndes High-sponsored South Georgia Diamond Brawl baseball tournament gets under way Thursday with games played at eight different sites.

Colquitt County will host four games Thursday, six games Friday and four more games on Saturday at Ike Aultman Field at Colquitt County High School.

Games will be played also at Lowndes High, Valdosta High, Cook County High, Brooks County High Barrien County High, Valwood School and Vadosta State University.

A total of 50 teams are entered in this year's event.

Games Thursday in Moultrie begin at 1:30 p.m. when Colquitt County JV meets Tift County JV. At 3:45, Colquitt's JV plays Barrien JV. Norcross will meet Thomas County Central at 6 p.m., and Lee County will face Lincoln of Tallahasse in the nightcap at 8:15.

Six games are scheduled for Friday. Effingham plays Thomasville-Central at 9:30 a.m. followed by Statesboro and Lassiter at 11:45 a.m.

That game marks the first appearance by Lassiter in Colquitt County since the 1997 state high school finals won by the Packers.

At 2 p.m. Bowles Academy of Jacksonville, Fla. will play Lassiter. Hamilton County, Fla. will meet Houston Co. at 4:15 p.m.

Colquitt's JV meets Houston County JV at 6:30 p.m., and Colquitt's Packers will meet South Effingham, former Packers assistant Tony Kirkland's new team in the nightcap at 8:45.

On Saturday, Colquitt will play Hamilton County at 9 a.m., and the Colquitt JV squad will meet Liberty at 11:45.

The Colquitt varsity will play Crisp at 1:30 p.m. followed by a 3:45 game between North Florida Christian School's and Lee County's junior varsity.
