MOULTRIE - Colquitt County High tennis coach Grant Hammack learned plenty about his teams on Thursday while watching them split a pair of Region 1-AAAAA matches with Tift County.
The Lady Packers remain undefeated after a 3-2 victory helped along when the Tift County No. 1 doubles team had to forfeit in the first set.
The Packers fell 2-3 when Tift County's John Bowen outlast Brian Michie in a three-hour, three-set marathon at No. 2 singles.
The Lady Packers, now 6-0 for the season, won at No. 1 singles where Lindsey Jacobs defeated Becky Alt 6-4, 6-3. Jacobs was down 0-3 in the second set before coming back to win.
At No. 2, Abbigail McCrary was defeated by Whitney Lightfoot 3-6, 3-6.
Colquitt got another point at No. 3 singles, where Amber Eunice played perhaps her best match of the season to defeat Sarah Dutcher 6-2, 6-3.
At No. 2 doubles, Anna Jordan and Landi Clark fell in three sets to Amanda Lawler and Marcie Shiver 3-6, 6-2, 5-7.
The Lady Packers got some help at No. 1 doubles.
Colquitt County's Gracie Qurnell and Elizabeth Singley were up 2-1 in the first set when Tift County's Anna Cohen, who was playing with Rachel Lawler, became ill and was unable to continue, giving the match to the Lady Packers.
Hammack was pleased to be able to come away with the victory over the Lady Devils, which gives his team a 3-0 region record.
"Tift had the motivation to beat us," Hammack said. "All these girls know each other and play in tournaments during the summer.
"It's become quite a rivalry, like the one we had for many years with Bainbridge. We knew they were waiting for us."
In an extra girls match, the doubles team of Anne Yearta and Monique Murphy won 8-1.
Colquitt's boys won at No. 1 singles where Nathaniel Hiers remained unbeaten after holding off Jacob Sauls in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
"Jacob was gunning for Nathaniel," Hammack said. "He gave Nathaniel a good run for his money. But Nathaniel is so consistent."
The Packers also won at No. 1 doubles where Taylor Dekalb and Clayton Brooks won their sixth straight match to open the season, 6-0, 6-0 over Bo Gray and Daniel Erickson.
But Colquitt's Tyler Tucker los to Charles Brown 1-6, 5-7 at No. 3 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Bradley Michie and Brent Allen also lost, 4-6, 5-7.
Michie and Bowen were the only ones remaining on the court and Bowen finally prevailed at about 7:30 p.m. Michie fell 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6.
"That was a tough one," Hammack said. "It was a defensive struggle.
"He'll feel it for a while. But it was good for him. I was proud of the way he played."
In an extra match, Sam Baker and Kyle Taylor lost a doubles match 5-8.
Hammack said he believes the Colquitt County and Tift County boys will battle for second in the region this season, behind Lowndes.
