MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High wrestling team will travel to Monroe High today to meet the Tornadoes and Dougherty in its final matches before Saturday’s Area 1-AAAAA championships.

The Packers should head to Albany with some confidence after finishing tied for fourth in the 16-team Blue Devil Invitational held Saturday at Tift County.

The Packers had one weight-class champion in Antonio Sutton, who likely will go into the area tournament as the No. 1 seed.

Sutton will take a 27-1 record into tonight’s meet. His sole loss was to Chris Wills of Valdosta, a defeat he later avenged. Also in Tifton, the Packers got fourth place finishes from Zacory Weaver, Tim Adams and Jacorey Dillard.

Lawrence Glenn and Felix Cruz took fifth-place finishes and Nathan Fowler and Trey Brooks each finished sixth.

“We’re wrestling well and our energy level is up,” said coach Randall Balch, whose team also defeated Thomas County Central on Friday.

“I feel like we had some kids who had a bad start on Saturday, but could have wrestled their way back if it had been a double-elimination tournament.”

Lowndes won the Blue Devil, with Tift County finishing second. Turner County was third with Colquitt County and Fitzgerald tying for fourth.

The Packers also got some strong efforts on Friday in the 56-24 victory over Thomas County Central.

Glenn, Weaver, Cruz, Sutton and Bryce Hall won by pins. Brooks won by an 18-0 decision. Fowler also won by decision.

Fowler will take an 18-12 record into tonight’s matches in Albany. Brooks is 17-11, Adams is 14-6, Dillard is 12-7, Weaver is 11-4 and Michael Jenkins, who did not wrestle because of a shoulder injury, is 11-11.

If they Packers can win both matches tonight, they will have doubled the victories from a year ago.

Balch said he felt good about his team’s chances of qualifying wrestlers for the state tournament, which will be held Feb. 9-11 at the Arena at the Gwinnett Center.

“I think we are peaking at the right time,” Balch said. “We’ll have several that will qualify. Wrestling four matches Saturday was good for us. It may take that again for some of our guys to qualify.”
