MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High cross country teams open their seasons today with veteran squads and the prospect of running three times on their own course this year.

The Packers and Lady Packers will run in the Tift County Invitational this morning at the E.B. Hamilton Complex in Tifton.

Colquitt will run at least three other times before playing host to its first home meet in several years.

A new course has been set up at Packer Park and cross country coach Mell Wier is eager to see how his teams perform when not having to get on a bus before running.

Colquitt will play host to meets on Tuesday, Sept. 30, and Thursday, Oct. 9, and will be the host team for the Region 1-AAAAA meet, which will be run on Tursday, Oct. 30.

“It’s going to be nice to have a place to call our own again,” Wier said.

This morning’s meet in Tifton will be the first big South Georgia event, with between 15 and 20 teams expected.

Wier said five Region 1-AAAAA teams will compete. Warner Robins, Houston County and Northside-Warner Robins will not make the trip.

Both the girls and boys teams have a number of performers back from the 2007 teams.

The girls team lost two runners from last year. The boys, none.

The girls team got stronger with the addition of junior Anna Hall, also an outstanding soccer player. Wier says Hall has the potential to be a state champion if she concentrated on running.

Joining her on the girls team will be Karli Brown, Lindsey Causey, Lacey Webb, Hannah Adair, Reyna Contreras, Carla Duque, Carly Moore, Carly Banks, Morgan Hayes, Laura Robinson, Abbey Taylor and Christina Craft.

Jenna Jones is the manager.

The boys team will be without Tyler Dismuke, an outstanding runner who is performing for the Packers football team.

But Wier does have Zac Goodno, Jonathan Cauthen, Craig Dabdoub, Heath Lamb, Jebb Cato, Judd Cato, Julio Perez, Joseph Strickland and Carlos Charles.

Both teams qualified for the state meet last year and Charles, Perez, Lamb and Dabdoub ran for the boys at state. Banks, Brown, Webb, Hayes, Moore, Robinson and Duque ran at state for the girls team.
