MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High cross country teams will run for the first time this season today and will give coach Mell Wier a little better idea about the Packers and Lady Packers chances of qualifying for the state meet.

Colquitt will go to Tift County today with the varsity and middle school teams competing.

The varsity boys have three runners returning, including Heath Lamb, who had a strong summer competing with the Albany Ruff Riders Track Club.

“He’s put in the miles,” Wier said. “I hope all that speed work with show itself this season.”

Also back for the Packers are Jonathan Cauthen and Ben Hoover.

The rest of Wier’s large boys team includes Raymond Jenkins, Jared May, Elias Moreno, Jay Jones, Paul Leonard, Lance Lott, Ismael Moreno, Jody Morris, Ricky Patel, Landon Rehberg, Richard Smith, Cole Wilkes, Kyle Tolbert, Connor Walsh and Jose Zunun.

“I think we’ve got some good talent,” Wier said.

The Packers could be able to compete with Warner Robins, Tift County, Lowndes and Valdosta in seeking a state meet berth.

“We know who the top three are,” Wier said of the Packers. “If two others run well, we could be right up there. It depends. It’s a complete unknown with the boys.”

While the boys team has just two seniors in Cauthen and Lamb, the Lady Packers have five: Hannah Adair, Carly Banks, Anna Hall, Morgan Hayes and Marla Medina.

And with Hall back in the fold — while also competing with the competitive cheerleading team — the Lady Packers could contend for a region championship.

“We weren’t far off last year,” Wier said. “Like I said last year, it will come down to who is on at the region meet.”

The Lady Packers returning runners are Hall, Adair, Hayes, Banks, Lindsey Causey, Lacey Webb and Karlie Brown.

Junior Samantha Price and freshmen Natalie Griffin, Taylor Humphries, Nikki Leddon, Jaycee Lott, Hannah Miley, Meg Robinson, Aislin Sheffield and Lindsey Stapleton round out the roster.

“A couple of those freshmen should be much better by the end of the season,” Wier said.

Senior Jenna Jones is the team’s manager.
