MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High basketball teams, each of which won two of three games in the Region 1-AAAAA tournament last week to qualify for the state tournament, placed two players each on the all-region boys and girls basketball teams.

Seniors Antwan Tuff and James Trimble turned their outstanding senior efforts into places on the all-region boys team.

Tuff, a guard who averages 13.7 points a game, was named to the first team.

Four times he scored 20 or more points this season, including 37 against Rockdale County and 25 against Tift County.

Tuff also had 59 3-pointers and averaged five rebounds a game.

Trimble, the somewhat undersized center who often managed to outrebound taller opponents, made the second team.

In his first season as a starter, Trimble averaged 11.5 points and 7.2 rebounds a game and in the final region tournament game he came up with a season-high 22 points.

Ashley Stafford, the Lady Packers senior wing player and point guard, made the all-region team for the second straight year and was named to the first team.

Stafford averaged 10 points and a team-leading 6.6 rebounds a game. She also led the team in assists, with 4.5 a game, and steals, with three a game.

Six-foot sophomore post player Taquella Coates, who averaged 9.9 points a game, was named to the second team. She averaged 6.3 rebounds and during the season scored 20 against Coffee, 19 against Valdosta and 18 against both Dougherty and Vidalia.

Tift County, which won both the regular-season championships, but failed to win either boys or girls tournament, had both the girls and boys Players of the Year and Coaches of the Year.

The Tift County boys finished the region regular season with an 8-2 record, but dropped its last two. They also split their two region tournament games, losing to Houston County in the finals.

The Blue Devils 6-foot-6 senior Justin Brownlee, who averaged 21.2 points and 9.7 rebounds, was the Player of the Year.

Johnny Spurlin, Tift County’s first-year coach who led the Blue Devils to a 19-7 overall record, was the Coach of the Year.

Tift County’s girls also went into the region tournament as the No. 1 team, but lost to Houston County and Colquitt County and are going to the state tournament as the region’s No. 4 team.

Lady Devil junior Jessica Jenkins, who averaged 13 points and five rebounds, was named the region’s Player of the Year.

Lady Devils coach Michelle Caldwell was the Coach of the Year.

Joining Brownlee and Tuff on the all-region boys first team are Larry Jackson of Lowndes, Demetrius Williams of Coffee and Keith Cagle of Tift County.

The second team includes Trimble, Jamal Brunson and Reggie Pero of Houston County, A.J. Brown of Lowndes and Brian Brown of Valdosta.

Receiving honorable mention are Avery Wright of Houston County, Quan Hancock and Lindsey Johnson of Coffee and Kevin Wright of Lowndes.

The girls first team includes Jenkins, Stafford, Krystal Thomas of Lowndes, Tonia Williams of Houston County and Lindsay Welker of Tift County.

The second team includes Coates, Shan Green of Coffee, Shanavier Walker of Valdosta, Candice Clark of Houston County and Justina Brownlee of Tift County

Brianna McClellan of Coffee and Star Bradley and Stephanie Sermons of of Lowndes received honorable mention.
