MOULTRIE -- Budget cuts may ultimately have an effect on the Georgia Games, but this spring and summer there are still plenty of opportunities for youth and adults to take advantage of its programs.
The South District Sports Festival, which includes Colquitt County, will play host to 23 events, including eight in Moultrie.
This is the 12th year of the South District Sports Festival, sponsored by the Georgia Games Commission.
The festivals were created to highlight amateur sports and events are open to all residents, regardless of age or skill level.
All participants receive Georgia Games T-shirts.
The South District includes Lowndes, Dougherty, Tift, Thomas and Colquitt counties.
The first event scheduled for Moultrie will be the popular fishing rodeo, which will be held May 31 at the Magnolia Sports Complex pond.
"People have lot of fun there," said Moultrie-Colquitt County Parks and Recreation Department Director Rick Gehle.
"The numbers have been real consistent."
The pond will remain open through December.
Moultrie also will be site of a bicycle motocross race at the Pineland Park BMX Track on June 7.
The entry fee for that race will be $10.
Most of the other Georgia Games Sports Festival events are patterned after Olympic events.
The others to be held in Moultrie are:
Youth tennis tournament, June 21-22, at the Jim Buck Goff Recreation Complex. 10-and-under through 18-and-under.
