MOULTRIE — The Stephenson High girls soccer team may have been 11-1 heading into its first-round state tournament meeting with Colquitt County at home on Thursday, but the Lady Packers did not act much impressed.

Colquitt jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead and led 5-0 before the LadyJaguars managed to score a goal and the Lady Packers advanced to the second round with a 7-2 win.

Colquitt will play the winner of Thursday’s match between Starr’s Mill and Camden County.

Starr’s Mill is ranked No. 3 in Class AAAAA.

The Lady Packers got five goals from their freshmen, including four by Alba Hernandez, giving her 31 goals this season.

Abbey Taylor, the other freshman, had one goal and a pair of assists.

“Everything was rolling good for us,” said Lady Packer coach Jimbo Jarvis, whose team raised it record to 13-6.

“And everybody got some playing time.”

Jarvis said the margin of victory could have been greater.

“We missed plenty of opportunities,” Jarvis said.

Hernandez served notice quickly that it would Colquitt’s evening when she scored just two minutes into the match.

With 29:29 left in the first half, Hernandez added her second goal, with an assist going to Sarah Tyndall, to make it 2-0.

Senior Sha Wetherington amde it 3-0 when she scored with 12:15 left in the half. Taylor was credited with the assist.

Hernandez closed out the first half scoring when she completed the hat trick with her third goal with 1:57 left.

Taylor got her second assist on the goal.

Hernandez got her fourth goal with 27:10 left in the match, with Tyndall getting the assist.

Taylor’s goal came on a corner with 17:42 left to put the Lady Packers up 6-1.

Whitney Hood got Colquitt County’s final goal with 6:02 remaining.

The Lady Packers had 15 shots on goal. Stephenson had just seven.

Prittany White had four of the Lady Jaguars shots and scored both of their goals.

Also on Thursday, the Tift County girls, the Region 1-AAAAA champions, advanced with an 11-0 victory over Riverdale.

Lowndes, the No. 4 team from Region 1-AAAAA, also advanced with a 4-1 victory over Newton.

The second round will begin Wednesday.
