MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High golf team shot the lowest score in a tournament since Donald Dale took over the team and it resulted in the first-place trophy at Monday’s Trojan Invitational sponsored by Lee County High at Grand Island Golf Club in Albany.

Led by a 69 shot by senior Matt Smith, the Packers shot a 289 to win by 10 strokes over second-place Tift County.

“That’s kind of what I have been expecting,” Dale said of the tournament-record 289 score.

The playing conditions were nearly ideal and far different from the cold and windy weather the team faced on Saturday when it shot 317 in the Demon Invitational at the Landings Golf Club in Warner Robins.

“The weather was beautiful and the course was real nice,” Dale said. “The greens were absolutely gorgeous.”

And the Packers took advantage. Smith’s 69 enabled him to finish as the second low medalist behind Columbus High’s Michael Lee, who shot a 68.

Josh Dale birdied two of the last three holes for a 72. He tied with Tift County’s Evan Hanna, but claimed third place on regression.

Clarke Hendrick and Aaron Elrod each had a 74. Dusty Campbell had an 84.

Dale said he hoped Smith’s 69 “is a breakthrough round for him. He’s certainly capable of that. I’m proud of him.”

Columbus was third in the 15-team tournament with a 304.
