MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County junior varsity girls soccer team found itself down 3-1 in the second half of its match with Houston County on Saturday at Mack Tharpe Stadium at Tom White Field, but never flinched.

The Lady Packers scored three times in the final 13:39 to defeat the Lady Bears 4-3.

Colquitt had managed only a Lunden Connell goal as the time ticked away with the Lady Packers facing a two-goal deficit.

But Connell got the Lady Packers to within a goal with her second score of the match with 13:39 remaining.

“That changed it right there,” Colquitt County junior varsity girls coach Andy Chapura said.

Five minutes later, Marissa Aldridge controlled a loose ball in the keeper’s box and slid it into the net to tie the match 3-3.

Then, with 3:12 remaining in the match, Suzi Hernandez broke free behind the Houston County defense and knocked in the game winner.

“I’m just so proud of each and every one of them,” Chapura said. “They never gave up. A lot of teams down 3-1 with 13 minutes left would have rolled over and died.”

The junior varsity girls are now 6-2.

The Colquitt County junior varsity boys got a goal from D.J. Vanzant to tie its match with Houston County 1-1 in the second half, but there was no further scoring as Colquitt tied the Bears for the second time this season.

The two teams tied 0-0 in Warner Robins.

Vanzant’s goal was his team-leading ninth of the season.

The junior varsity boys are now 6-0-2 for the season.

“Our guys played hard,” Colquitt County coach Mell Wier. “And we like playing this bunch (Houston County).”

The junior varsity soccer teams travel to Tift County on Monday.
