MOULTRIE — Colquitt County JV soccer Coach Mell Wier likes those zeros on the scoreboard next the Packers opponents’ names.

And he got another one on Monday when Colquitt County blanked Lowndes 3-0 at Packer Park.

The JV Packers are now 5-0 and while they have scored 29 goals in those games, Wier is prouder of the fact that his team has surrendered just two.

“We’re playing good defense and we’re playing all over the field,” Wier said.

The Packers got two goals from Roberto Ruiz, giving him eight for the season, and one from Guillermo Torres, his fifth.

Daniel Gonzalez and Lance Lott had assists.

The JV Packers will be off until next Monday when they at Valdosa at 5:30 p.m.

The junior varsity girls also continued to play outstanding defense in a 1-0 victory over Lowndes.

The JV Lady Packers are now 3-1-1 and have surrendered just two goals in their five games.

“Our defense played two very good halves of soccer,” said Coach Steve Harp. “We’re still making marked improvement.”

Jaycee Lott got the match’s only goal with 17 minutes remaining.

Madison Turner and Jade Deloache got the assists.

The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie back on Feb. 22 in the Lady Packers season-opener.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SWEEPS pine grove

The middle school girls and boys soccer teams scored 14 goals between them on Monday in a road sweep of Pine Grove.

Madison Sumner got two goals and Ferrell Tyndall, Mary Holt Statom, Selyna Gant and Amber Boyd got one each as the middle school Lady Packers raised their record 8-5-1 overall and 8-1 in South Georgia Athletic Conference matches.

Colquitt’s girls have shut out five of their last six opponents.

Coach Kristen Harrison said she was able to give some of the girls who usually play defense a chance to play up top and let some of the forwards play some defense.

Harrison was also pleased with the play of Kali Summerlin and Yasmin Moctezuma.

“They did a real good job for us up top,” Harrison said.

The middle school boys jumped out early on a pair of Marcus Lopez goals, but Pine Grove rallied to tie the game at 2-2.

But Francisco Gomez got the first of his three goals and Eric Gould fired one in from about 35 yards out to put the Packers up 4-2 at the half.

Colquitt went up 5-2 when Gomez headed in a corner kick by Jason Nunez.

After Lopez scored his third goal of the game, Gomez matched him with his third.

And when Esbin Soto scored on a penalty kick near the end of the game, the Packers had taken an 8-3 victory.

Gomez also had five goals when Colquitt County played Pine Grove in Moultrie on Feb. 3.

The middle school boys are now 11-1-2 overall and 7-1-1 in the SGAC.

Packers coach Ashley Hill said he expects a physical game when his team plays host to Coffee on Wednesday.

And on Saturday morning, the middle school teams will travel to Tift County, which got a sweep when the two schools met last month.
