MOULTRIE – Kevin Blanton has a memento on the wall at his home commemorating the time he and younger brother Andy won the Ramsey Pidcock golf tournament at Sunset County Club in 2005.
And if the brothers play this weekend in the 2019 edition of the event as they have in four other recent tournaments this year, he might have to find space for another.
The Blanton brothers have to be among the favorites in the 65th edition of the tournament.
The field is a competitive one and includes the 2018 championship team of Andrew Dismuke and Todd Hilton.
But the Blanton boys have a history of playing well in the tournament.
Kevin has been on the winning pair four times dating back to 1993 and most recently paired with Greg Coop to win in 2009.
Andy has won the Ramsey Pidcock six times, including in 2014 when he teamed with John Lee Redding.
It is unlikely the two have ever been playing as well heading into the tournament as they are this year.
Dating back to a four ball tournament at Francis Lake, the two have won four straight events. They were on the team that also included Lee Wright and Sunset assistant golf pro Aaron Elrod that won this year’s Pot o’ Golf Pro-am in March.
Since then, the brothers have won another tournament in Valdosta and one in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
“We’ve been on a little bit of a roll for a change,” said Kevin, a member of the Colquitt County Sports Hall of Fame for his outstanding work on the fairways and greens over the years.
“The last couple of years I haven’t played that well. But I think I’ve found my game a little bit.”
He says Andy has been playing real well lately too.
Their games complement each other.
“We have different games,” Kevin said. “Andy has a very natural swing and he can really hit it.
“I’m a more strategic player. I try to hit the fairways and greens and if my putter’s working, I’ll play well.
“So he knows if I’m playing well, he can be more aggressive. We’ve got the system figured out.”
Kevin said playing together more has helped them weather the storms all golfers face on the course.
“There have been times we might have imploded, but now we know how to back each other up,” he said. “We know when to kick each other in the rear, so to speak.”
Both brothers were fine collegiate golfers and have remained in the area and continue to play competitively at Sunset.
Kevin says he has been able to play more often lately and it is showing in his performance.
“I know I’m getting older,” said Kevin, now 48. “So I try not to set my expectations too high.”
Duplicating their 2005 feat won’t be easy.
In addition to Dismuke and Hilton, this year’s field includes Jonathan Bridges and Jared Bridges, who won in 2016.
Jared Bridges recently won the Sunset Club championship, shooting a 5-under 211. Jonathan Bridges was third with an even par 216.
“There will be a lot of good teams out there,” Kevin said. “Jonathan and Jared are playing well right now. Lee Wright and Tyler Key will be tough.”
Key was the runner-up in the Club Championship, shooting 2-under.
Also in the field are former Ramsey Pidcock winners David Matthew and Chad Eunice, who played together to win in 2015 and 2017.
Matthews will play with Reb Benton this weekend. Eunice will play with Jeff Jursik.
Other former winners in the field include Clarke Henrick, Brad Eunice, Eli Stripling and Andrew Eunice.
The tournament field includes 104 teams. The number of teams is fewer that usual, but Elrod said he hopes it will allow the event to run smoother.
Tee off will be at 7:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
Elrod said the band Pine Box Dwellers will perform on the tennis courts on Saturday night following the end of play.
