MOULTRIE — Evelyn Fagan’s gold medal on beam was the highlight of the Moultrie YMCA gymnastics Level 9 team’s third-place finish in the second annual Paws for a Cause Invitational held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.
Fagan scored an 8.425 on the event, and added a fifth-place medal on vault for her 8.65 effort.
Her 29.875 all around total, which was good for sixth place, included an 8.25 on floor and a 4.55 on bars.
Colquitt County High senior Sammie Phillips took home the silver medal on floor with a strong 8.725 score.
She also earned a sixth-place award. She added an 8.025 on beam and an 8.00 on vault while placing fourth all around with a 31.95.
Jordan Yates turned in a personal best score of 8.8 on vault that earned her the third place bronze medal.
Her 6.25 on bars was good for fourth place.
She earned another personal best score of 8.525 on floor and a 7.20 on beam, while totaling 30.755 all around and placing fifth.
“The girls are still struggling a bit on bars, but rearranging some skills led to better form and higher start values,” said coach Bob Swadel. “The judges on floor were pretty tough all day, but I liked our floor routines. Sammie’s routine was better than it was at Hilton Head, but earned a lower score. Jordan and Evelyn did some really nice vaults and Evelyn’s beam was really steady and fun to watch.”
In the level 8 session, Alexis Parkerson scored a personal best 9.1 on floor, earning the fourth [place medal.
She added scores of 8.2 on vault, 8.05 on beam and 5.95 on bars for an all around total of 31.30, for fifth place.
Bryleigh Parkerson also turned in a personal best score on floor with a 9.125. The effort earned her a silver medal.
She added scores of 7.85 on vault, 7.05 on bars and 7.45 on beam.
She placed fourth all around with a score of 31.475.
