MOULTRIE — Jade Horne pitched 12 scoreless innings to lead Colquitt County to a 8-0, 8-0 doubleheader sweep of Tift County on Thursday at Lady Packer Field.

The victories raise the Colquitt girls record to 20-5 and makes this year’s team the first in school fast-pitch history to reach 20 wins.

“We knew this group was going to be special and I’m excited for them that we were able to do it,” coach Chance Pitts said.

With the sweep and a Lowndes sweep of Camden County on Thursday, the Lady Packers finish second in Region 1-7A.

They will play top-seeded Lowndes in the three-game playoff series that begins with a Wednesday doubleheader at Lowndes. The if game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday.

Colquitt’s game against Camden County scheduled for Saturday has been canceled.

The Lady Packers had split their two Region 1-7A games at Tift County earlier in the the month, but Horne made sure the Lady Devils were no threat on Thursday. She allowed just three hits and two walks and did not allow a runner to reach third in the first game.

In Game 2, she gave up five hits, but again, Tift did not advance a runner to third base.

In the fifth inning, two Lady Devils were forced out at third.

“It was just Jade,” Pitts said. “It was what she always does. She always gives us a chance to win when she’s in the circle.”

The Lady Packers won the first game when they scored a run on three hits in the bottom of the sixth.

Sarah Harrell gave the Packers all the runs they needed when she hit a high, long two-run home run to left with one out in the second and duplicated the effort in fourth, driving a pitch high over the fence in left center to put Colquitt up 4-0.

The Lady Packers put the game out of reach in fifth, scoring three times. Emily Allegood reached one one-out infield single and Marlie Wingate followed with a walk.

One out later, Kelsey Patel guided a single to right to score Allegood, and Callie Faircloth singled to center to drive in two more runs making it 7-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, Colquitt got the run to make it 8-0 when Katlynn Powers singled with one out, went to third on Abby Plymel’s base hit and scored the winning run on Allegood’s single to left.

The Lady Packers had 12 hits, including two each by Harrell, Allegood, Patel and Madison Plymel one. Powers, Wingate, Patel and Faircloth had the others.

Harrell drove in four runs and Wingate and Faircloth each drove in two.

In Game 2, Colquitt scored four times in the bottom of the first, with three scoring on a bases-loaded triple by Patel, who scored the fourth run on a single by Faircloth.

The Lady Packers added three more in fourth, with Brooke Durrence diving in one with a well-placed bunt in the front of the plate and Abby Plymel plating another with a single to right.

Abby Plymel tripled to lead off the sixth and scored on an error for the run-rule necessary eighth run. She was 4-for-4 in the second game and had five hits in the doubleheader.
