MOULTRIE — Led by a 77 from freshman Elizabeth Funderburk, the Colquitt County girls golf team shot a 242 on Monday, good for second place in the Lee County Invitational at Grand Island in Albany.
The Lady Packers also got an 82 from freshman Alexis Griner and an 83 from Allison Fagan.
Shelby Tidwell shot 93.
But Tift County turned in a 233 to take first place and defeat the Lady Packers by nine strokes in a meeting of what are expected to be the top two girls teams in Region 1-AAAAAA this season.
“We didn’t play near up to our potential today,” Colquitt County coachMatt Key said.
Coffee was third with a 286 and was followed by Houston County and Veterans, both of which shot 301.
The Lady Packers will play next on Monday, March 16, in the Lady Blue Devil Invitational at Spring Hill Country Club in Tifton.
The Colquitt County varsity boys shot a 345, good for seventh place, in the Trojan Invitational, also at Grand Island.
Junior Braden Traylor led the Packers with an 81.
The other four Colquitt County scores were posted by freshmen.
J.W. Griffin shot an 85; Tyler Scott, an 89; and Peyton Clark and Harrison Kebler, a 90.
Valdosta’s Lucas Allikulppi was the low medalist with a 73.
Northside of Columbus was first with a 309. Coffee was second with a 322.
Valdosta was third with a 323 and was followed by Lee County, 324; Tift County, 326; Thomas County Central, 341; Colquitt County, 345; Houston County, 356; Bainbridge, 375; Worth County, 380; Lee County JV, 382; Northside-Warner Robins, 396; and Veterans, 411.
The Packers will be off until Saturday, March 21, when they travel to Douglas for the Coffee Trojan Invitational.
At Valdosta Country Club on Monday, the Colquitt County middle school boys golf team shot a 380 to finish third out of eight teams.
Coffee and Pine Grove tied for first with a 352 and and Packers posted the next-best score.
Tift County shot a 391 for fourth. The middle school Blue Devils are followed by Hahira, 412; Lowndes, 426; Valdosta, 439; and Cook, 489.
The middle school Packers were led by Tanner Brown’s 82.
Lance Blanchett shot an 83; Tyler Key, a 95; and Caleb Yarbrough, a 120.
Also playing for the Packers were David Friedlander, who shot 132, and Nicholas Vines, who had a 133.
The low medalist was Will Spivey, who shot 73.
The Colquitt County middle school girls also finished in third at Valdosta Country Club.
The Lady Packers got a 116 from Madison Willis; a 117 from Brenna Blanton; a 133 from Cate Tyler; and a 134 from Ally Johnson.
The low medalist was Padget Chitty of Hahira who shot a 79.
“We’ve got a lot of growing to do,” said coach Heather Brown. “We’ve really got to work on our chipping and putting.”
