MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County High soccer teams will travel to Atlanta on different days next week to begin play in the Class AAAAAA state tournament.
The Lady Packers, who finished fourth in Region 1, will meet Region 2 champion Lakeside of DeKalb County at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hallford Stadium in Clarkston.
The Colquitt County boys, the No. 3 team from Region 1, will travel to play Tucker, the Region 2 runner-up at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Adams Stadium in Atlanta.
The Packers finished the regular season 9-8-1 and haven’t played since blanking Valdosta 3-0 on April 17 to finish with a 3-5 region record.
Tucker will go into the game riding an eight-game winning streak. The Tigers are 13-2 overall.
Packers coach Jimbo Jarvis saw the Tigers play last week and likes his team’s chances.
“They’ve got some speed outside and up top and are talented in the midfield,” Jarvis said. “We’ve got to keep them in check.
“But they’ve got some weak spots. We’ve got a game plan and I think we can shut down what they want to do and make them play our game.”
Jarvis said he expects to start freshman Blayton Duncan in the nets, although he won’t hesitate to use Ozwald Padilla, another ninth-grader, who also is a strong keeper.
The back line will feature the Rodriguez twins, Ryan Littleton, Will Barber and Nic Johnson.
Playing the midfield will be Jose Moreno, Bryan Gallardo and Jason Nunez. On the outside will be Tyler Lopez, Jonathan Cruz and Raymon Garcia.
Garrett Moore has been creating plenty of trouble for opposing defenses since moving up top from his midfield position.
“He has been very productive for us the second half of the season,” Jarvis said. “He is as cool as a cucumber and has been our best at finishing the ball.”
The Colquitt County girls are 11-7 and have drawn a Lakeside team that is 15-0-1 with only an April 14 0-0 tie with Woodward Academy spoiling its record.
Also in first-round girls action, Region 1 champion Tift County play host to Lovejoy; runner-up Lowndes will be home to face Tucker; and No. 3 Lee County will travel to Alcovy.
Region 1 boys champion Lowndes will play host to Alcovy; runner-up Tift County will play host to Rockdale County; and No. 4 Lee County will go to Lakeside-DeKalb.
