MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls soccer team ended a four-game losing streak, but the Colquitt County boys’ rally came up short in a row in a pair of matches against Cairo on Tuesday at Packer Park.
The Lady Packers, who opened the season with seven straight wins, had lost four in a row, all to Region 1-AAAAAA teams, before blanking the Syrupmaids 3-0 on Tuesday.
“Despite the four-game streak, we’re definitely happy tonight,” coach Trey Jones said.
“We’re very pleased with their performance.”
The Lady Packers will try to build on the win, but will have to wait until next Tuesday when they travel to Worth County.
Their next region game will be on Friday, March 27, against Valdosta at Packer Park.
Diana Durham got the Lady Packers first goal on Tuesday and Taylor Page added another in the first half on a breakaway. Aubrey Norris got the assist. Durham got the final Lady Packers goal with about five minutes remaining in the contest.
“We kept the ball in their half a lot,” Jones said.
The Colquitt girls had scored just two goals in their three previous game.
Although she was not often challenged, keeper Sarah Matney managed the defense well, Jones said.
The Colquitt County boys outshot visiting Cairo 9-2 in a first half that ended in a 0-0 tie, then they came to life too late in a 3-2 loss.
The young Packers are now 5-6-1 overall and have lost four of their last five.
Cairo took the lead on a goal three minutes into the second half and scored again with 7:20 left to go up 2-0.
Coach Jimbo Jarvis said his team appeared embarrassed to be down two goals and quickly cut the deficit in half on a goal by Garrett Moore, assisted by Tyler Lopez.
But another minute later, Cairo broke loose to score again to go up 3-1.
A Jason Nunez goal in the final minute made it 3-2.
“The way we played the last seven minutes, that’s the way I want us to play all the time,” coach Jimbo Jarvis said. “Sometimes we play like there’s no urgency to put the ball in the back of the net. I want us to start our next game like we finished this game.”
