If the Colquitt County baseball team is going to make a Region 1-AAAAAA statement, today would be the time to do it.
The Packers, sporting a somewhat surprising 4-4 region record, will play host to 6-0 and region-leading Coffee in a doubleheader beginning at 4:30 p.m. today at Ike Aultman Field.
The Trojans have swept doubleheaders over Lowndes, Brunswick and Camden County, none of which has a winning region record.
Today, Coffee will begin a final run through the region against Colquitt County, Valdosta and Tift County that will put that perfect record to the test.
The Packers have been unable to win the first game of any of their first four region doubleheaders, although, to their credit, they have rallied to win the second in each one.
For the second straight week, the Packers will try for their first three-game winning streak of the season when they take the field in the first game.
Clayton Brown has been the Packers first-game pitcher, but despite a 3.86 ERA, he does not have a region win. He leads the team in innings pitched and strikeouts and will try to get his second win of the season tonight.
Cole Bryant is 5-0 with a 3.04 ERA and has been the second-game pitcher this season.
Austin Craven and Beau Dalton, who have 1.07 and 0.51 ERAs respectively, will be in the bullpen.
The Packers will take a fine 2.72 team ERA into the game.
Senior third baseman Ross Goforth leads the Packers in hitting with a .417 average and has 10 extra base hits.
Second baseman Daniel Mobley is the Packers hottest hitter and will take a .407 average into the game. He has three doubles, a triple and a home run and leads the Packers with 19 runs batted in.
Sophomore right fielder Kodi Bishop is hitting .333 with a pair of doubles and 11 runs batted in.
Mack Hathcock went 2-for-2 with a triple and two walks in the Tuesday win over Cook.
Also today in Region 1-AAAAAA, Camden County will visit Valdosta and Brunswick will go to Tift County. Lowndes will be off.
