The Colquitt County middle school wrestling team placed third in the SGAC tournament held Saturday at Lowndes High School.

Hayes Sumner and Ethan Dean finished off undefeated seasons on Saturday by leading the Colquitt County middle school wrestling team to a third place in the South Georgia Athletic Conference tournament held at Lowndes High School.

Ten of the 20 Packers who competed placed in the top four of their weight classes, led by Sumner and Dean, who won weight class championships.

“Both are well-deserving of their accomplishments,” said Colquitt County middle school wrestling coach Kevin Sumner.

Jon Cone, Dylan Collins and Kamrin Woods finished second in their weight classes.

Brian Merritt and Will Horne placed third and Jacob Harris, Jujuan Williams, Victor Castenon and Gary Larson finished fourth.

“All the kids wrestled well today,” Sumner said. “We are still a young team, but the kids work hard and it shows every time we wrestle.”

The middle school team’s record was 14-1 with its only loss to Tift County, which won the conference championship.

“They have a great program with a lot of kids,” Sumner said of Tift County.

Lowndes placed second in the conference tournament.

“Our kids are excited about wrestling and as coaches that's all we can ask for,” Sumner said.
