MOULTRIE -- The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team was ranked No. 23 in the most recent USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Top 25.

The Lady Golden Bulls, coached by former Colquitt County High Packerette Vanessa Taylor, are 16-2 and carried a 12-game winning streak into Thursday night's game against Winston-Salem State.

Cole Willis, a senior at Macon-East Montgomery Academy, has received a scholarship to play golf for Central Alabama Community College next season.

"It's just a real good place for me - a good fit," said Willis, who is the son of former Colquitt County High golfer Zess Willis and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Bennett Willis of Moultrie.

"It's the top-ranked junior college program in the country."

Zess Willis also played for the school in Alexander City back in the 1980s. ...

Former Packer and Georgia Southern baseball player Will Southwell will red-shirt this season. Southwell is being groomed as the Eagles' starting first baseman. ...

Ty Megahee, another former Packer infielder, will start at shortstop for the Mercer University Bears, who open the 2005 season on Saturday against Savannah State in the John Hodges Classic. Megahee, who played two seasons at Darton College, is a senior this year. ...

South Georgia College, where a bigger and stronger Adam Anderson will patrol left field, will open its season on Saturday against Lake Sumter Community College in Jacksonville, Fla.

Anderson has signed to play at Valdosta State next season. ...

Valdosta State, with former Packers right-hander Thomas Tripp on its pitching staff, will open Feb. 5 at home against Edward Waters.

Tripp's former Packers teammate Aaron Eubanks is expected to pitch in relief for Clemson University this spring.

The Tigers are ranked No. 21 in the Collegiate Baseball poll and No. 23 in the Sports Weekly/ESPN poll. Clemson opens Feb. 18 against West Virginia in Myrtle Beach, S.C. ...

Jake Mobley and his Georgia Southwestern teammates open their 2005 season today against Warner Southern in Lake Wales, Fla. ...

Former Lady Packer Britney Wetherington had 17 points and eight rebounds as Berry College beat Auburn-Montgomery 68-53 on Monday. The Lady Vikings were 13-7 overall and 7-3 in the conference heading into Thursday's game against Emmanuel. ...

Ashley Jacobs is back for her sophomore season on the Fillies tennis team. The Fillies play their first match on Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla.

Sophomore outfielder Ashley Harrison is on the roster of the softball team, which opens its season on Tuesday at Brewton-Parker.
