MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High wrestling team, hit by injuries and fatigue, was defeated by Coffee High on Wednesday in Douglas and failed to qualify for the state duals, but coach Randall Balch said the team still has a chance to rebound and have good season.

And while the varsity Packers were resting up on Thursday, the Colquitt County middle school wrestling team split a pair of matches at the the Pineland gymnasium.

The middle schoolers defeated Coffee 47-36, with Jesse Goff, Blake Thompson, Taylor Huite, Zack Cannon and Carlton Brooks each winning by a pin.

Jacob Hall, Blake Powell, Tyler Dismuke, Beau Weathers and Bryce Giddens all took decisions.

The middle schoolers had no such luck against Hahira, falling 48-16. Dismuke and Weathers won by pins and Shain Nowland took a decision.

The middle school team will return to action on Saturday when it travels to Leeburg for the Lee County tournament.

The varsity Packers bused all the way to Douglas only to fall to the Trojans 46-30.

Colquitt got its 30 points on pins by Antonio Sutton, Michael Jenkins, Oscar Quintinilla, Trey Brooks and Zacorey Weaver.

The Packers also dropped two close matches, including one in which Felipe Jiminez fell in overtime.

“We’re in a rough part of the season,” Balch said. “There’s a little frustration setting in. The kids have worked hard and have had some success, but the nicks, bumps and bruises and starting to catch up with us.”

With the next match scheduled for next Wednesday at Pelham, the Packers will get a chance for some of their hurts to heal.

The next competition after that is on Jan. 24 as the season hits its short rows.

“I’m confident we’ll have several guys qualify for the state tournament,” Balch said. “We’ve some some who are on the edge and will have to wrestle well at the (qualifying) tournament to make it.

“I think we can make that happen.”

Balch is hoping to get Shaun Jiminez, who recently suffered a broken nose, back to enable the team to fill all 14 weight classes.
