MOULTRIE — If Kevin and Andy Blanton were going to win their second straight Ramsey Pidcock Invitational on Sunday, they were going to have to do it in a playoff.

Casey Willis and George Faircloth had other ideas.

The pair birdied the first playoff hole to win the championship of the 52nd Ramsey Pidcock, which closed out its two-day run on Sunday at Sunset Country Club.

The Blanton brothers, who shot a 126 to win the tournament in 2005, shot a 64 on Sunday to finish at 129. The two are longtime Sunset players.

Willis and Faircloth, who opened with a 62 on Saturday, fired a 67 to force the tie and the playoff.

And once in the playoff, Faircloth did the damage. He had an eagle on No. 10 earlier Sunday.

Then, after Willis, who is from Tifton, birdied the final three holes in regulation, Faircloth’s birdie with dark clouds looming gave him and his partner the championship.

Fairchild, who is from Cordele, refused to take credit for the championship.

“We are a team,” he said. “We really are a team.”

Kevin Blanton moved back to Moultrie recently and said he has not had an opportunity to play much since then.

He said it was his younger brother who kept the twosome in the hunt.

“Andy carried us,” he said. “He played well.

“We played good on the back nine. But the good thing was that everybody had a chance down the stretch. There were four or five teams that had a chance to win.”

Andy Blanton was just a shot away from a sixth Ramsey Pidcock championship. A win would have been the third for Kevin Blanton.

The team of Grady Clements and Aaron Elrod was third with a 66-64 for a 130, just one shot back.

Ernie Venet and Don Lucas teamed up to win the first flight, carding a 133. Clarke Hendrick, a rising Colquitt County High sophomore, and John Fordham, who will be a freshman, were second with a 136.

The teams of Jeff Jursik and Kirk Friedlander and Ben Fuller and Chuck Harrod turned in the best scores in the second flight, a 136. Fuller and Harrod won on regression.

In the third flight, Billy Edwards and his son Billy Edwards III shot a 66-73 for a 139 for the win. Donnie Edwards and Don Stringer were second with a 140.

Craig Stevens and Bud Beaty won the fourth flight with a 144 by two shots over the team of Don Hart and Jim Turner.

Harry Spires and Chip Blalock were first in the fifth flight with a 140. Mike Briggs and Danny Williamson were second with a 150.

A 144 posted by Ray Folsom and Henry Rackley won the sixth flight by one shot over Chris Giles and Jason Bell.

Tatum Johnson and Jason Womack won the seventh flight with a 147. Gerald Matthews and Jonathan Hayes were second with a 152.

David Farrell and Jack Johnson won the eighth flight with a 147. Phillip Groom and John Scarboro were second with a 156.
